Mark Alleyne celebrates C&G Trophy success with Gloucestershire in 2003

Former Gloucestershire captain and coach Mark Alleyne has been appointed as MCC head coach.

The 40-year-old replaces Clive Radley, who will retire in early April after 18 years in the role.

Alleyne boasts a similarly distinguished career, having spent 21 seasons at Gloucestershire.

He captained the side to seven one-day titles between 1999 and 2004, before taking up the role of head coach until 2007.

He also played 10 one-day internationals for England and was awarded an MBE for services to cricket in 2001.

Currently in charge of England Under-15s, Alleyne also coaches at the ECB National Performance Centre in Loughborough.

“I am very pleased to be joining MCC as head coach,” said Alleyne, who will be responsible for overseeing the MCC Young Cricketers at Lord’s and developing coaching structures.

“Much like Clive and his predecessors, I look forward to a long relationship with MCC and I hope I can bring similar success to the club and to the development of the MCC Young Cricketers.

“MCC is at the heart of world cricket and Lord’s is the best stage to operate from.

“It is my aim to ensure that successful coaching programmes are put in place, links to MCC Universities are built on and the MCC Young Cricketers attracts the top aspiring cricketers around the country.

Clive Radley & The Queen

Clive Radley, seen here receiving his MBE last year, will stand down as MCC head coach in early April

“This is an exciting opportunity and I can’t wait to get started.”

MCC assistant secretary John Stephenson, the man behind Alleyne’s appointment, said: “We are delighted that Mark has accepted our offer.

“He has the ideal blend of cricketing experience and reputation allied to a very appropriate coaching style for the club and our MCC Young Cricketers in particular.

“In addition, Mark has proven motivational skills and a very good understanding of the business of cricket.

“Chosen from a very strong field, he will be a tremendous asset for MCC and I look forward to working with him.

"Succeeding ‘Rad’ won’t be easy but I’m very confident that Mark will excel in the role.”

Former Middlesex batsman Radley’s decision to retire ends a 48-year association with Lord’s, during which he was also awarded an MBE.

He will remain with MCC for the 2009 season, assisting Alleyne during the early part of his tenure while coaching the combined MCC Universities team.
