Barclay named MCC president
John Barclay, the former Sussex captain, has been confirmed as the next president of MCC.
Barclay, 55, will begin his one-year term when Derek Underwood stands down on October 1 - an announcement made during MCC’s annual general meeting at Lord’s.
Barclay is best remembered for leading Sussex to the brink of a maiden County Championship triumph in 1981, when they were pipped to the title by Nottinghamshire.
He also scored 1,000 runs in four consecutive seasons from 1976 to 1979, managed two England tours after his retirement and spent 11 years on the MCC committee over three spells.
His recent book, Life Beyond the Airing Cupboard, won the MCC and Cricket Society book of the year prize last month.
Underwood said: “It gives me great pleasure to nominate John Barclay as president of MCC for 2009/2010. He has the same boyish love and enthusiasm for the game now as he did when he made his first-class debut aged 16.”
