Bicknell announces retirement
Veteran Surrey seam bowler Martin Bicknell, one of the club’s greatest players in the modern era, has decided to retire from first-class cricket, effective immediately.
The 37-year-old, in his 21st season with the county, had planned to hang up his boots at the end of the season. However, niggling injuries have forced the Surrey legend to call it a day.
Bicknell, regarded by most as one of the best bowlers in County Cricket for over a decade, joined a select club last season when he became the 15th bowler for Surrey to reach 1,000 first-class wickets.
Bicknell said: "I have loved every minute of my time at Surrey but I think that now is the right time. It's been a huge honour to represent the county for this long and the memories I have and the friends that I have made during my time here are priceless."
Surrey Cricket Manager, Alan Butcher, added: "Martin Bicknell is one of the true Surrey greats. Over 1,000 wickets in a 20-year career marks him out as a great bowler, but his contributions with the bat over the last seven or eight years have elevated him to the position of a genuine all-rounder.
“He was integral to Surrey's success during the 'glory years' between 1997-2003, and is one of those cricketers who are truly irreplaceable."
