Jonathan Clare celebrates Alastair Cook's wicket against Essex at Derby

Derbyshire all-rounder Jonathan Clare has committed his future to the county by signing a new contract until the end of 2009 with the option of a further year.

Clare, who made his debut at the end of last season, has enjoyed an outstanding start to his first-class career with 15 wickets at 19.53 and 199 runs at 39.80.

The 21-year-old right-hand batsman and medium pace bowler took a five-wicket haul on his LV County Championship debut against Nottinghamshire last September before claiming three wickets for a single run versus Essex.

He scored a fifty in both innings against Warwickshire last week – the second of which was a brutal 64 scored from 59 balls.

Clare said: “Becoming a professional cricketer with Derbyshire was a dream come true and now having the security of at least two full seasons in which to prove myself is great for me.

“I have worked hard at my game since signing the initial contract and I will continue to do so as I aim for a successful career with Derbyshire County Cricket Club.”

Head of cricket John Morris added: “I am delighted that Jonathan has signed a new and extended contract because he is a talented young cricketer and a potential star of the future.

“Having broken into the team and showed so much promise at the end of last season and earned his first professional contract, Jonathan has worked very hard on his game and has earned this extended deal.”
