Hamilton signs off on winning note

Clydesdale Bank 40

James Benning

Leicestershire failed to overhaul a revised target of 113 from 21 overs despite James Benning's 42 off 41 balls

Gavin Hamilton ended his Scotland career in style as they beat Leicestershire by 12 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method in their Clydesdale Bank 40 clash at Mannofield Park in Aberdeen.

The former captain marked his final game before retirement with 23 in Scotland's total of 166 for nine from 40 overs. Claude Henderson returned figures of 4-25.

Leicestershire's reply was disrupted by rain and they were limited to 101 for seven as they chased a revised target of 113 from 21 overs, with James Benning scoring 42 from 41 balls.

Leicestershire struck early after Scotland had won the toss and elected to bat when Harry Gurney dismissed Fraser Watts for one.

Scotland then lost four wickets for eight runs to slip from 42 for one to 50 for five. Much of the damage was done by 38-year-old slow left-armer Henderson, who got rid of Ryan Flannigan, George Bailey and Dougie Lockhart.

Richie Berrington provided some resistance with 46 off 59 balls - he was Henderson's fourth victim - while Majid Haq smacked a valuable 29 not out off 27 balls.

Leicestershire opener Benning did his best to help overhaul the target, revised after the rain delay, but received little support from his team-mates.

He was run out by Gordon Goudie to leave the visitors 57 for three in the 13th over.

Wayne White also contributed an unbeaten 27 off 28 balls, but the wickets continued to fall at a steady rate as the visitors fell just short.
