Geoff Cook has been appointed as Durham's new head coach after the resignation of Martyn Moxon.
Yorkshireman Moxon left after almost six years in charge at the Riverside, leaving the way open for Durham Academy coach Cook to take over.
Cook said: "I am absolutely delighted to take responsibility for the professional squad and have the chance to work with what I think is the most promising group of players in the country.
"This season is certainly going to be an exciting one and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead."
Moxon said it had been a tough decision to leave Durham, citing the travelling from his home in Wetherby as one reason behind his departure.
"My time at Durham has been thoroughly enjoyable, and I have felt great satisfaction in working with such a fantastic group of people, both on and off the field," said Moxon.
"The team has developed over the years and it has been wonderful seeing the young talent emerging from the region.
"This has been a very difficult decision to make, but the travelling from Wetherby to Chester-le- Street has affected my ability to fulfil my responsibilities to the high standard that both I and the club demand.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the club for their support."
Cook played first-class cricket from 1971 to 1990, captained Northants from 1981 to 1988, and represented England 13 times before joining Durham in 1991 when he captained the side.
He was appointed director of cricket in 1992, Durham’s maiden season as a first-class county, and was one of the first coaches in the country to receive his Level Four qualification.
Durham chief executive David Harker said: "We are delighted to be able to give this opportunity to one of our coaching team.
"Geoff has enjoyed enormous success running the Academy."
Chairman Clive Leach added: "We would like to thank Martyn for his commitment and dedication to Durham during his time with us and would like to wish him the best of luck for the future."
