Redfern shows potential

Dan Redfern's awesome display of hitting nearly saw Derbyshire home to victory

A brilliant maiden one-day fifty from Derbyshire's teenage batsman Dan Redfern dented Yorkshire's NatWest Pro40 promotion hopes as the Division Two game at Derby ended in a thrilling tie.

The Phantoms were sliding towards defeat at 128 for six with 10 overs left chasing Yorkshire's 213 for seven in a match reduced to 34 overs by rain.

But Redfern, who hit 57 not out from 56 balls, and Tom New (28 from 24) played superbly to plunder some wayward bowling and leave the home side needing nine from the last over.

England Under-19 international Redfern hit the first ball from Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for four and a scrambled leg-bye off the last delivery denied Yorkshire a victory that had earlier looked in the bag.

Rana had a roller-coaster night, hitting his highest one-day score - 74 from 58 balls - but conceding 62 runs from seven overs which included seven wides and three no-balls that almost cost his team the game.

Such late drama appeared unlikely when Rana and Jacques Rudolph provided the foundation for a challenging total by adding 77 in 11 overs for the second wicket.

Rana was badly missed at long-on by Ian Hunter on 11 and the Pakistani found his range after taking 26 balls to get to double figures, by smashing Nayan Doshi for the first of his four sixes.

Rudolph reached his fifty off 59 balls, while Rana opened his shoulders against Doshi, who was twice dispatched high over the long on boundary.

Doshi beat Rudolph's attempted reverse sweep but Rana survived another chance on 42 at long-on to inflict further damage.

Wavell Hinds, who was the unlucky bowlers both times, was pulled over wide long-on and driven straight for two fours before he holed out to long-off.

Yorkshire lost some momentum in the closing overs as Ian Hunter took three wickets but Derbyshire still needed to score at more than six an over.

Rana helped their cause by conceding 37 from his first four overs, including five wides and two no-balls, but he also struck twice.

Greg Smith hit him for two fours before he chipped to mid-on and then Hinds was caught on the crease to be lbw for a duck.

Deon Kruis dealt another big blow to the home side's hopes when he had Chris Rogers lbw for 19, playing across the line in the ninth over, to finish with excellent figures of 1-19 from seven overs.

Rikki Clarke and John Sadler, playing his first one-day game for two months, added 40 in nine overs but an excellent spell of leg-spin by Adil Rashid appeared to have derailed Derbyshire.

Clarke drove to cover and, although Sadler pulled Darren Gough for six, he was lbw aiming a slog sweep at Rashid in the next over.

Wagg drove his first ball onto the pavilion roof but was bowled going for another big hit, yet Yorkshire started to unravel with Redfern and New homing in on the target.

The pair added 85 in 10 overs to carry Derbyshire to the brink of a famous victory that was only denied by a superb diving stop from wicketkeeper Simon Guy off the last ball.
