Hinds extends Derbyshire stay

Derbyshire

West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds will remain with Derbyshire next season after signing a new contract with an option of a further year in 2010.

The 31-year-old left-hander, who joined Derbyshire in June, will continue as a Kolpak player, having made a positive impression with five half-centuries and 16 wickets in all competitions.

Hinds was in particularly impressive form during the Twenty20 Cup when he starred with 61 from 43 balls against Yorkshire and 72 from 51 against Lancashire.

A veteran of 45 Tests and 114 one-day internationals, Hinds’ bowling played a key role in the recent LV County Championship Division Two victory over Middlesex as he produced a magic spell of three wickets for three runs on the pivotal final day.

Head of cricket John Morris said: “I am naturally delighted to have secured the services of a player with such experience and quality for at least another year.

“As well as being an exceptional cricketer, Wavell is a terrific personality to have in the changing room and his wealth of experience at the highest level has been, and will continue to be, invaluable.”

Hinds added: “I have enjoyed my first season with Derbyshire immensely and I am therefore very pleased that I have been offered the opportunity to return in 2009.

“We have a talented group of players here and ambitious plans for the future. I am excited about being a part of that future.”
