Joseph scripts Kent rout

Robbie Joseph

Robbie Joseph was Kent's destroyer-in-chief as they hammered Derbyshire

Robbie Joseph claimed five victims for just 13 runs as Kent thrashed Derbyshire by nine wickets at Canterbury in Division Two of the NatWest Pro40.

Derbyshire were skittled out for just 60, the lowest score they have ever posted in a one-day match, and Kent raced to their victory target in just 9.4 overs.

Joseph was the chief destroyer with the ball, with his stunning figures from eight overs ranking as the best of his career in Pro40.

Derbyshire’s previous all-time low one-day score had been the 61 they achieved against Hampshire at Portsmouth in 1990.

The visiting batsmen had little answer to the home pace attack and wickets fell at regular intervals.

Amjad Khan knocked out Chris Rogers' middle stump with the score on two, and Joseph began his destructive spell with a wicket in his first over.

Rogers went without scoring and Greg Smith had hit one boundary when Joseph bowled him.

A stand of 22 took the visitors to 28, but they then lost four wickets in three overs.

Former Derbyshire captain Rikki Clarke was bowled by Joseph for six, and the Antigua-born paceman’s next ball trapped Dominic Telo for nought.

Wavell Hinds had hit two fours in an over from Khan but was bowled in Ryan McLaren's first over after replacing Khan.

The sequence of wickets falling in consecutive overs was completed with Tom New's dismissal when he edged Joseph to Justin Kemp at first slip.

The Phantoms were reduced to 37 for seven three overs later when Joseph completed his five-wicket haul as Graham Wagg drove straight to the safe hands of Darren Stevens at cover.

James Tredwell replaced Joseph and did not wait long before claiming a wicket.

His off-break beat Jake Needham who was bowled for seven, and with just one further run added it was 54 for nine as Charl Langeveldt was run out as he dashed for an ambitious second run.

Khan returned for a second spell and wrapped up the Kent innings with his second wicket, having top-scorer Jon Clare edge behind the stumps for 18.

Kent Spitfires wasted no time in sealing victory, with captain Rob Key’s wicket the only one to fall.

Key had made a quickfire 20 but fell with the score on 49, brilliantly caught one-handed by Needham at mid-off, off the bowling of Clarke.

Joe Denly finished unbeaten on 28 from 32 balls, having struck four boundaries, and Martin van Jaarsveld hit the winning runs to complete a win inside two and a quarter hours.
