LV= County Championship Division Two-winning skipper Wayne Madsen has put pen to paper on a new three-year contract at Derbyshire.

Since sealing their return to the top flight, the club have been the most active in the domestic game, tying a string of players to new deals and signing Billy Godleman and Richard Johnson.

A continuation of that business comes in the shape of Madsen’s fresh terms, which are a reward for him leading Derbyshire back to the promised land in his first season as skipper.

Madsen, the club’s leading first-class run-scorer with 885 at an average of 38.47 last term, said: “What we achieved last year was incredible and this is a club that's growing and moving in the right direction on and off the field.

“To lead this squad is a great honour. I’m so excited about where we are heading and we're looking forward to challenging ourselves in Division One next season.

“My wife Kyla and I see this club and the county of Derbyshire as our home, so to be here for another three seasons is fantastic.”

Head coach Karl Krikken added: “You can see by his record that Wayne is a fine player. He has topped our run-scoring in first-class cricket in 2012.

“The way he has led the side this season, in his first year in the job, has been absolutely magnificent. He’s got a great captaincy style and the example he sets the younger players in terms of his work ethic is fantastic.

“I’m delighted we’re continuing to work together to keep taking the club forward.”

Meanwhile, specialist batting coach David Houghton has penned a one-year deal.

Krikken added: “David is without doubt a premium, top-level batting coach who quite rightly commands a great deal of respect within the game.

“For our talented young batsmen to once again be able to tap into his experience, knowledge and expertise will be of great benefit to both the individual players and the club as a whole as we embark upon the challenge of Division One cricket.”
