New joins Derbyshire on loan
Derbyshire have signed Leicestershire wicketkeeper-batsman Tom New on a month’s loan as cover for injured gloveman Jamie Pipe.
The 23-year-old will go straight into the Derbyshire side for Sunday’s NatWest Pro40 clash with Surrey Brown Caps after Pipe suffered a broken finger on the first day of the LV County Championship Division Two match against Northamptonshire at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield, on Wednesday.
New has played 44 first-class games for Leicestershire and averages a useful 31.98. He has two first-class centuries and 16 fifties and has affected 56 dismissals behind the stumps.
In limited overs cricket his opportunities have been limited by the evergreen Foxes captain Paul Nixon but he has notched up 29 matches and averages 24.69 with the bat.
Derbyshire head of cricket John Morris said: “We are delighted to be able to bring Tom in as cover for James Pipe. James has been in great form this summer but has unfortunately suffered a broken finger which will sideline him for a while.
“Tom is a talented young player who has had a good amount of first team cricket and is a very capable batsman. At this stage of the season we wanted to bring someone into the side who can make an impact and I am sure Tom will want to grasp this opportunity.”
