Derbyshire have confirmed the signing of South Africa left-arm spinner Robin Peterson on a Kolpak deal.
The 30-year-old has taken 14 wickets in six Tests and has also proved a handy limited-overs bowler, while his aggressive batting has seen him promoted up the order by the Proteas in the shorter forms of the game.
He will join from Cape Cobras in time for the new season, and Derbyshire head of cricket John Morris said: “We are delighted and excited by the capture of Robin, who is an all-rounder of international quality and plenty of experience.
“Good quality spin bowlers are a valuable commodity in the modern game, as are explosive batsmen. Robin brings both of those attributes to the party and I am thoroughly looking forward to working with him in 2010.”
Regulations on Kolpak players have been tightened for next season, meaning the likes of Sussex’s Dwayne Smith have lost their status.
However, Peterson’s recent international involvement - including two Twenty20s against Australia in March - make him eligible.
