Derbyshire have tied down yet another member of their Division Two title-winning side.

Home-grown wicketkeeper Tom Poynton, 22, has signed a new three-year deal following an impressive breakthrough season.

In addition to completing 43 dismissals behind the stumps, Poynton - who replaced the retired Luke Sutton - contributed 393 four-day runs at an average of 30 and shared a remarkable partnership of 261 with skipper Wayne Madsen against Northamptonshire in August.

Poynton’s decision to stay at Derbyshire until the end of 2015 continues a familiar theme. Ross Whiteley, Tony Palladino, Jonathan Clare and Wes Durston have all done likewise.

He faces increased competition, however, after Richard Johnson recently completed a permanent move from Warwickshire, having impressed during a loan spell when Poynton was injured.

“Derbyshire is the county I've represented since I was 11 throughout the age groups and committing to another three years on the staff is exactly what I wanted,” Poynton explained.

“What we achieved last season is something we're all proud of and - with the average age of the squad so young - we have serious ambitions to build on that success over the next few years.

“The camaraderie at the club is incredible and I'm delighted to stay a part of it for at least another three years.”

Head coach Karl Krikken said: “To be thrown straight into first-team wicketkeeping duties with limited first-class experience was a tough ask, but Tom has developed fantastically this summer.

“He's a home-grown cricketer that we've backed to succeed and he's coming good for us by developing into an established first-class player.”
