John Sadler has signed a new one-year contract at Derbyshire that will see him captain the second XI.

The 27-year-old left-handed batsman played just three first-class matches this year, and will concentrate his efforts on developing the second string from 2010 onwards.

Sadler will remain a member of the first XI squad next summer, although he is most likely to appear in the limited-overs side, having featured in all but one of Derbyshire’s Twenty20 Cup games and made five NatWest Pro40 appearances this season.

Head of cricket John Morris said: “It is important that we have continuity and having John Sadler primarily captaining the second team will help us continue to bring on our younger players.”

Sadler began his career at Yorkshire before moving to Leicestershire in 2003 and joining Derbyshire last year.
