James Foster lifts the Friends Provident Trophy after Essex's win over Kent

Essex wicketkeeper James Foster has committed his future to the county by signing a contract extension until the end of the 2011 season.

The 28-year-old averaged more than 50 in the LV County Championship and took more than 76 catches in all competitions last season, helping Eagles win the Friends Provident Trophy and NatWest Pro40 Division Two.

Foster, the Essex vice-captain who has played seven Tests and 11 one-day internationals for England, underwent shoulder surgery in October but expects to be fully fit for the start of the 2009 season.

First XI coach Paul Grayson said: “Foster has been outstanding for a few years now. He is at the top of his game and has been consistent for the past few years.

“I honestly believe he is the best wicketkeeper in the country and James was the backbone of our success in 2008.

“If he was to have another good start to this season he could force his way into the Ashes squad and that is exactly what he deserves. He is the model professional as vice-captain of Essex.”

Foster added: “I am delighted to be signing a new contract until the end of the 2011 season.

“I love Essex, I am an Essex boy and I am very excited about the way the team is developing under the leadership of (captain) Mark Pettini and Paul Grayson. The 2008 season was the highlight of my involvement with Essex.

“I underwent surgery on my shoulder in October; the recovery took a little longer than I originally anticipated. However, I should be back to full fitness before the start of the season.”
