Glamorgan name Ashes groundsman

Glamorgan have taken steps to ensure they provide the best possible pitch for the first npower Ashes Test by appointing Andy Atkinson as acting head groundsman.

Atkinson, who brings a wealth of experience to the role, takes over from long-serving groundsman Len Smith who stepped down earlier this month.

Atkinson is the current ICC chief pitch consultant and has previously been head groundsman at Newlands in Cape Town, the Wanderers in Johannesburg and Edgbaston. He has also worked at Lord's and the Brit Oval.

His role will primarily focus on regenerating the square and preparing the wicket for the npower Ashes Test. He will also supervise the installation of the new outfield drainage system and a completely new and level outfield surface.

In addition to his work on the field, Atkinson will be responsible for re-establishing the external practice nets and will undergo a total audit of equipment. He will also assist in the appointment of a new permanent head groundsman.

Glamorgan aim to recruit a permanent head groundsman by February while Andy will remain as a consultant to the club until the completion of the first npower Ashes Test.

Chairman Paul Russell said: "Andy's appointment brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the club and I am extremely confident that our preparation of the wicket, square and outfield for the npower Ashes Test will be second to none."
