TwelfthMan: My account
Glamorgan are searching for a new captain after they decided not to renew David Hemp’s contract after 16 years with the county.
The 37-year-old, who has also skippered Bermuda, was informed a number of weeks ago by Glamorgan cricket manager Matthew Maynard that the club would be releasing him along with Richard Grant.
Hemp in turn informed Maynard that he did not intend to retire as a professional cricketer. He hinted that he will seek to find a future with a county close to his family home in the Birmingham area.
“I still want to pursue a future in county cricket and we will have to wait over the next three or four weeks to see what happens,” Hemp said.
“I will try to speak to counties who are close to my family home in Solihull and see if there are any offers on the table.
“I will always be indebted to Glamorgan for giving me an opportunity in county cricket.
“And it will be strange not seeing the players every day. I am going to miss things.”
Hemp finished second in the Glamorgan first-class averages with 34.68. He scored two centuries, both 104, against Oxford UCCE and Derbyshire.
“It was not really that unexpected. I completely understand the reasons for not being offered a new contract. If I had carried on as I started the season then maybe a new deal would have been on the table.
“I had a chat with Matthew in early August and he told me my own individual performances needed to improve.
“I was averaging 35 at the time, so when your scores actually come down, it is going to influence a decision and I was not expecting anything different.
“This was coupled with the fact the club were making decisions about next season and I was not involved with them, which as captain you would want to be consulted on.”
Maynard said: “David has been a great asset to Glamorgan since joining the club's junior staff in the late 1980s.
“During his time with Glamorgan, he has featured in several highly successful teams.
“David was a member of the Glamorgan squad that won the National League title in 1993, 2002 and 2004. He has been club captain since 2006 and we wish him the best of luck for the future.”
Former Middlesex and England player Jamie Dalrymple, who picked up the Watkin Jones Glamorgan Medal as player of the year at the county's dinner, is the frontrunner to be Hemp's replacement.
