Glamorgan have expressed their desire to keep head of elite performance Matthew Mott after confirming he has been approached by New Zealand regarding their vacant head coach position.

Australian Mott took charge of Glamorgan ahead of the 2011 season and has been given permission to speak to New Zealand Cricket as they seek a successor to John Wright.

In a statement, Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer said: “We are keen to retain Matthew Mott's services - however, like all good coaches, he has aspirations to work at the highest level and we have therefore given him our blessing to apply for the vacant head coach role at New Zealand Cricket.

“We understand that Matthew is one of a number of applicants being interviewed for this role and that the process will be concluded by the end of this month.

“The club will make no further comment until the outcome of this process is known.”

Wright announced at the beginning of May that he would be stepping down as New Zealand’s coach, citing differences with director of cricket John Buchanan as a significant reason for his decision.
