Combative bowling all-rounder Graham Wagg has signed a contract extension to keep him at Glamorgan until the end of the 2015 season.

The 29-year-old left-arm swing bowler joined from Derbyshire in September 2010 on a three-year deal and his attributes with the ball, as well as his forthright batting, have seen him become a vital member of the club’s squad.

Despite his 2012 appearances being limited after breaking a bone in his foot during early May, Wagg still set two Glamorgan-best performances this year as he took 6-44 versus Derbyshire in the LV= County Championship followed by 4-45 against Surrey in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

Glamorgan’s head of elite performance Matthew Mott said: “Graham is a three-dimensional player and someone who offers our squad great balance and options in all three formats of the game.

“He was badly missed when he was injured last season, so to have him back fresh for the start of next season is a real boost.

“His infectious energy and enthusiasm have a real impact every time he takes the field. The foot injury he sustained last year occurred when he was at the top of his game so hopefully he can start the 2013 season in the same vein of form."

Wagg added: “I’m delighted to sign a new contract with Glamorgan; my family are settled in Cardiff and it’s a great place to play cricket.

“I came to Glamorgan to help the club win silverware. We haven’t got there yet, but the club is ambitious and keen for success. We’ve got a talented bunch of lads in the dressing room and we’re determined to be competitive next year.”

Meanwhile, talented all-rounder Ruaidhri Smith has been given a development contract for next season. The 18-year-old seam bowler, originally from Glasgow, is also an attacking right-handed batsman and spending this winter developing his game in Australia.

Smith scored 145 not out on his debut for Scotland Under-19s in South Africa before shining in August’s U19 World Cup - at which he was the fourth-highest wicket-taker with 12 scalps and had an economy rate of less than four an over.

Glamorgan head of cricket development Richard Almond said: “Ruaidhri was the club’s 2012 academy player of the year, so I’m pleased to see he has been rewarded with a development contract with Glamorgan for next season.

“He is a definite talent for the future and his signing, along with the recent contracts awarded to players such as Ben Wright, Andrew Salter, John Glover and Mike Reed, is a clear indication of the importance of developing our own players.”

Mott added: “Ruaidhri has performed extremely well when he has represented Scotland. He has been in our system for some time and we are confident that he will have an exciting and successful career. He is talented young cricketer and importantly also has a good work ethic."
