Former Gloucestershire chairman Alan Haines died yesterday in Cheltenham Hospital after a short illness.

An enthusiastic supporter of the club for over 50 years, Haines served in many positions on its committees including the management committee from 1991. Having become vice-chairman in 1996, he was chairman from 2002 until 2005.

Haines was a member of the local council and chairman of Gloucester where he worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Gloucester Festival. Much of the sponsorship for the festival at the Waggonworks Ground and later at Kings School was secured through his efforts.
