Kirby commits to Gloucestershire
Pace bowler Steve Kirby has committed his future to Gloucestershire by signing a new contract.
The England Lions seamer put pen to paper on a new “long-term” deal, although the club refused to reveal the length of the contract.
The announcement comes just a day after vice-captain Alex Gidman signed a new three-year contract, and ensures incoming coach John Bracewell should have strong foundations to work from next summer.
Kirby, 30, said: “I am absolutely delighted to be signing a long-term contract at Gloucestershire.
“This has not been any easy decision. In fact, it is the toughest decision of my life.
“A major factor has been my family. They are very settled in Bristol and Gloucestershire are a strong family unit and look after them very well.
“The other massive factor has been the appointment of John Bracewell as director of cricket. I am really looking forward to working with him.
“I am still massively ambitious to play for England and I do feel he can help me continue to improve.”
“With John Bracewell and the club’s intent to strengthen the squad I believe there are exciting times ahead for Gloucestershire over the next few years and really looking forward to being part of it.”
Kirby has taken 339 wickets at an average of 29 in 83 first-class matches for Gloucestershire since joining from Yorkshire ahead of the 2005 season.
Gloucestershire chief executive Tom Richardson said: “Steve had bowled very well for the club in his four seasons with us.
“It is really good that he is continuing with us. He is an integral and very important part of the club as we move forward and we are delighted he has pledged his future with us.”
