Jimmy Adams

Jimmy Adams, who became club captain in September, has committed to Hampshire for the next three seasons

Hampshire’s new club captain Jimmy Adams has signed a one-year contract extension, tying him to the county until the end of the 2014 campaign.

The left-handed batsman took over from Dominic Cork in September, although the club last month announced Dimitri Mascarenhas will resume the Twenty20 captaincy - leaving Adams with the responsibility in first-class and List A cricket.

Adams, 31, was awarded his Hampshire cap in 2006 when he recorded his highest first-class score: 262 not out versus Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

He played in Hampshire’s 2009 Friends Provident Trophy and 2010 Friends Provident t20 triumphs, the latter coming during a phenomenal personal summer which included 1,351 first-class runs, a record 668 in the FPt20 and 496 in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

He was rewarded with selection for the England Performance Squad that went to Australia in late 2010 and England Lions’ tour of the Caribbean in early 2011.

Adams’ previous summer’s exploits were hard to follow but he performed consistently with 935 runs in the LV= County Championship, although Hampshire were relegated, 314 in the CB40 and 319 in the Friends Life t20.

He said: “It’s great to be able to commit myself to the club for another year. I feel we have a great core of players and staff and the future is bright so I'm very excited about the next few years.

“There will be new challenges for all of us, starting with trying to get first division cricket back at the Rose Bowl.”

Hampshire manager Giles White said: “As captain and player Jimmy has a big part to play in Hampshire's future. He continues to push himself and develop his game through good honest hard work and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve in the coming seasons.”
