Du Plessis extends Lancashire stay

South African batsman Francois Du Plessis will play for Lancashire for the next three seasons, subject to a work permit and registration.

The 24-year-old, who also bowls useful leg-spin, has extended his current contract until the end of the 2011 season.

Du Plessis will continue to play for South African side Nashua Titans in their domestic competitions during the English winter, and both clubs will work closely together on his cricketing development.

Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson said: “‘Faf’ (Du Plessis) is a very talented cricketer who has made significant contributions during his first season at the club. He is one of the best fielders in the world, and his energy and athletic nature have had a positive effect on the entire squad.

“Not only has he made an impact on the field, but has already endeared himself to the Lancashire supporters for his consistent performances this season.

“We see Faf playing an important part in the team for years to come and I’m delighted he shares the same vision.”

Du Plessis added: “I’ve had a fantastic season at Lancashire and have thoroughly enjoyed everything about my first year at the club. When I originally signed, my focus was to continue to develop as a cricketer and to make an impact when given an opportunity.

“I love the club and am excited about the prospect of playing here for at least the next three seasons.”
