Lancashire are offering fans the chance to own a piece of history as the Old Trafford outfield is dug up at the end of this season.
Lancashire’s NatWest Pro40 match against Middlesex Crusaders on Sunday (17th August) will be the last match at Old Trafford this season after which the outfield is due to be uprooted and a new state-of-the-art drainage system installed.
Upon the completion of the game, which begins at 1:45pm, Lancashire are offering supporters to venture onto the outfield for photos as well as the opportunity to buy pieces of the hallowed turf (not the square).
Over the years the outfield has seen plenty of action; Jim Laker’s 19 wickets in a Test, Alec Stewart’s century during his 100th Test Match, the 2005 Ashes thriller, the 1971 Gillette Cup semi-final in the dark and Shane Warne’s “ball of the century” to name but a few.
Hundreds of people have left instructions for their loved ones to scatter their ashes at Old Trafford and with the building of a new outfield Lancashire will pay respect to those dearly departed with a short but special service during the interval of the match, led by the Rev. Malcolm Lorimer.
