Lancashire players, supporters and local residents back Old Trafford's redevelopment outside Trafford council's town hall
Lancashire have received the go-ahead for their £32million plan to redevelop Old Trafford.
It is hoped the decision by Trafford council will mean Lancashire can secure a Test match future at their headquarters.
Lancashire had been told that, without substantial redevelopment of Old Trafford, this summer’s Test between England and Bangladesh would be the last there.
Instead, after receiving permission, they are free to press on with their plans - which include the siting of a Tesco superstore adjoining the ground.
To remain an international venue in the medium term, construction work at Old Trafford must start next year so that ECB deadlines can be satisfied.
A report to the council had already recommended approval, and found favour with Lancashire chief executive Jim Cumbes.
The decision means that, subject to formal approval by Government Office North West, preparation work can begin on the redevelopment of the ground. Construction work is set to start in the autumn.
Cumbes said: “This is an historic decision for the future of international cricket in the north-west – we can now press on with redeveloping the famous Old Trafford cricket ground and securing our place as one of the world’s best cricketing arenas.
“The planning committee recognised the important role the club plays in supporting Trafford’s economy – especially through hosting international matches like the Ashes.
“They also backed our plans to deliver a much-needed new retail (centre), offering hundreds of local jobs and millions of pounds in regeneration to this part of the borough.
“With construction work now scheduled to start in the autumn, I would personally like to thank everyone who has backed our proposals.
“We have been overwhelmed by the level of support and encouragement we have received.”
