Sarwan stays and Cobb is promoted

Leicestershire have announced that Ramnaresh Sarwan has extended his contract by two years and Josh Cobb has taken over the Foxes' limited-overs captaincy from Matthew Hoggard.

West Indies batsman Sarwan signed in February on a season-long deal and has been a consistent run-scorer in first-class and List A cricket, earning him an extension until the end of the 2014 campaign.

Ramnaresh Sarwan has been rewarded for his fine impression at Leicestershire, including 608 LV= County Championship runs at 43.42

The 32-year-old right-hander, who has not played for the Windies in just over a year, has scored 608 LV= County Championship runs at an average of 43.42, including two hundreds. He also struck 115 from 89 balls versus the Netherlands in the Clydesdale Bank 40.

Leicestershire chief executive Mike Siddall said: "Ronnie has created a tremendous impression since he joined us.

"We are delighted to have secured his services for another two seasons. He is a fantastic player and his influence on our younger players has been excellent."

Cobb, a 21-year-old batting all-rounder, succeeds Hoggard, who steered the Foxes to Friends Life t20 glory last year but to just two wins from 10 games this time.

Cobb, who was skipper in two tour matches this season, has his first assignment in charge today against CB40 Group A leaders the Netherlands at Amstelveen.

Siddall added: "Having seen how well Josh captained the side against Australia and West Indies, Matthew Hoggard expressed a desire to hand over the one-day captaincy to Josh Cobb.

"With the group stages of the Friends Life t20 competition now finished, Matthew feels that the time is right for that change and he will continue to lead the team in the LV= County Championship."
