TwelfthMan: My account
Middlesex have agreed to release Nick Compton after the batsman turned down a two-year contract extension.
Compton signed a new deal for 2009 but had a verbal agreement with Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser that he could decide to leave at the end of the campaign.
The 26-year-old grandson of legendary England and Middlesex batsman Denis Compton was the county's top run-scorer in 2009, with over 1,600 in all formats.
Fraser said: “Obviously this is disappointing news for everyone at Middlesex.
“The Compton name has huge resonance at Lord’s, and it has been something that Nick has had to live with since signing for the club in 2001.
“After two disappointing seasons in 2007 and 2008, Nick appeared to be showing the potential he has this year.
“Middlesex offered Nick a new two-year contract with a significant pay rise, but Nick feels he is at a stage in his life where he needs new challenges and a fresh start elsewhere.”
Compton added: “I leave on good terms with the club but I feel that it is time for me to make a fresh start and set myself a new challenge in my career.
“I would like to say a special thanks to my team mates both past and present for their contribution to my time at Lord’s and of course to the administration, coaching staff, committee and members for their continued support of me and my cricket over the years.
"Having the opportunity to play for Middlesex at Lord’s, to follow in the footsteps of not only my grandfather but many great past players, makes me very proud and also respectful of my place in a long line of history at Middlesex.
“I leave with some great memories and friends and I wish Middlesex all the success in the future.”
