Youngsters Josh Davey and Ollie Wilkin have signed new contracts with Middlesex, the latter having decided to end his studies at Loughborough University. Davey has penned a new one-year deal and Wilkin a two-year full-time contract.

In the past three seasons Davey has played more first-team cricket for Scotland than he has for Middlesex. The 22-year-old has played nine one-day internationals, one Twenty20 international, 33 Clydesdale Bank 40 matches and a solitary first-class game for Scotland. In these he has scored 723 runs at an average of 23.3 and his 37 wickets have cost 24.7 runs apiece.

Davey has had fewer opportunities with Middlesex’s first XI but gave a glimpse of what he is capable of when he scored an excellent unbeaten half-century against Worcestershire in last season’s CB40 match at Uxbridge. In 2013 Davey will not play CB40 cricket for Scotland but will be available for selection for all of their international matches.

Wilkin played a limited amount of cricket for Middlesex in 2012 but in the two Friends Life t20 games he featured in he too showed what he is capable of producing. Against Essex the 20 year-old took 3-12 and in front of a big crowd at the Kia Oval he scored an invaluable 28 to help Middlesex defeat Surrey. Wilkin has played first-class cricket for Loughborough University but is yet to make his debut in this form of the game for Middlesex.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said: “It is the bigger name signings that always receive the largest coverage but signing young players with a lot of potential is equally important to a club like Middlesex. Josh and Ollie are talented all-rounders that we hope will have a big impact on Middlesex in years to come. The departure of Steven Crook means that both have an excellent chance of pushing for first-team cricket in 2013.

“Middlesex and Scotland have decided it to be in Josh’s best interest to just play for Middlesex next season, with the exception of full international matches. The regular travelling from London to Edinburgh has made it hard for Josh to feel committed to one side and we believe a full year with Middlesex will allow him to get the best out of himself. It will allow us to see what he can produce on a regular basis.

“Last year was difficult for Ollie but we believe he has the talent to be a very good and dangerous cricketer. Whilst he did not play a great deal for Middlesex he continued to impress with Ealing Cricket Club at the weekend. We hope to see him have a similar affect on Middlesex games from 2013 onwards.”
