Nicky Boje has agreed to a one-year contract extension at Northamptonshire, which will see him lead the club until the end of next season.

Boje, 36, the former South Africa all-rounder, has been at Northants since mid-2007 on a Kolpak registration, and took over the captaincy on the resignation of David Sales before the 2008 season.

Boje has led the Steelbacks to 2009 Twenty20 finals day, while helping them challenge for promotion in this season’s LV= County Championship. He now has the prospect of leading the county in the top flight, should Northants win promotion this year.

He made a career-best 226 not out for Northants last season, and has scored 565 runs and taken 19 wickets in first-class cricket with his left-arm spin this year.

Boje said: “I’m delighted to play here for another year. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I think we have some good things going on here at the club. It is exciting to be part of the set-up here.”

Northants head coach David Capel commented: “Nicky has been a big part of our squad over the past couple of years, with captaincy and his all-round ability, he is a massive asset to Northants.

“It is great news that he is coming back for another year. I enjoy working and look forward to continuing to work with Nicky.”

Boje played 43 Tests, 115 one-day internationals and a single Twenty20 international in his 10-year career with the Proteas.
