Panesar pays respects to Northants

Monty Panesar

The "much-loved" Monty Panesar bade farewell to the Nortamptonshire faithful by contributing £10,000 to the club

Monty Panesar has made a £10,000 donation to Northamptonshire as he prepares to begin the next stage of his career at Sussex.

The England left-arm spinner’s departure from Wantage Road was confirmed on Monday, ending a 10-year association with the club.

He may have signed a three-year deal with Sussex in a bid to win back his England place, but his generous gesture reflects the esteem in which he holds the club that oversaw his development from promising teenager into one of the finest slow bowlers in the world.

Panesar, who is currently playing for the Highveld Lions in South Africa’s domestic first-class competition, said: “The day has finally come to venture into pastures new.

“It has been a wonderful experience which will not be forgotten easily.

"I will cherish all the memories of Northants Cricket and associates and would like to thank all the senior members, in particular, David Capel for playing an important part in my development and growth in the game.

“Most importantly, not to forget the fans from Northants that have also played such a big part in my life. I wish Northants Cricket and all the people involved at the club the very best for many years to come.”

Head coach Capel said: “This is a magnanimous gesture from Monty and it is well received by all at Northants Cricket.

“It is pleasing that Monty has recognised the support and guidance he has received during the formative stages of his already distinguished career.

“He is a much-loved person and cricketer and I feel sure that he will return to the England team. I look forward to him pulling on the England shirt on many more occasions and watching him celebrating taking important Test match wickets in the future.”
