New Northamptonshire chief executive David Smith will start his role at Wantage Road in the New Year after replacing Mark Tagg

Northamptonshire have installed David Smith as their new chief executive.

Smith will start his role at Wantage Road in the New Year, replacing Mark Tagg who left the club at the end of October after eight years in the position.

He brings a wealth of experience to the club after previously occupying roles as a chief executive at Leicestershire, committee member at Warwickshire and ECB board member.

Smith, who played first-class cricket for Warwickshire from 1975 to 1985, also has 20 years of consumer-facing PLC leisure retail experience and is relishing the opportunity of working for Northamptonshire.

“I’m delighted to have been appointed to the chief executive role at Northants Cricket; the club has made real progress both on and off the field over the past few years,” Smith said.

“The ground development has improved the facilities on offer to all visitors to the County Ground.

“The team have narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One in the LV= County Championship twice in the last three years, as well as appearing in a t20 finals day.

"This indicates a good quality playing staff and I'm looking forward to working with the coach David Capel and the board of directors to bring future success to the club."

Club chairman Martin Lawrence said: “We are delighted to have David on board, and we are certain that he is the right person to help this club progress towards our ambitions.

"His appointment ensures Northants Cricket have a bright future ahead and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome him to the club.”

Acting chief executive David Beckett added: “David’s experience in cricket is outstanding and we are sure that he will make Northants Cricket successful in all areas of the business.

“Throughout the recruitment process, David impressed us with his plans for the ongoing improvement of Northants Cricket.”
