Young seamer Sam Sweeney has signed a two-year contract with Northamptonshire.

The 20-year-old Preston-born bowler, who played for Lancashire Under-19s, impressed for Northants’ second XI this year and made his senior debut in the Clydesdale Bank 40 win over Warwickshire at Edgbaston on August 29.

“I’m very happy to have signed for Northants Cricket. I will try and push for a first XI spot, whilst continuing to improve my all-round game,” he said.

“Everyone has been very welcoming since I arrived, and made me feel part of the team. I am looking forward to this challenge.”

Head coach David Capel added: "I am pleased that Sam has signed a two-year deal with Northants Cricket. He has impressed the coaching staff through producing some encouraging performances in our second Xl during 2011."

“Sam is settling in Northampton well during the off-season and working hard on the physical and technical aspects of his game."
