Vaas stays with Northants
Northamptonshire have confirmed that Chaminda Vaas will return as their overseas player next season.
The former Sri Lanka all-rounder, who turns 38 in January, has signed a new one-year contract to remain at Wantage Road.
Vaas, who played 111 Tests and 322 one-day internationals for his country, has made a significant impression in two seasons at Northants.
He claimed 23 wickets at 14.86 apiece during a stint as overseas player during the Friends Life t20 last year, and went into this week’s LV= County Championship match against Surrey having taken 61 at 21.47 in the longer form of the game this summer.
“I’m very happy and I’m looking forward to another season with Northants,” said Vaas.
“I feel I’ve done really well and I can’t wait for another brilliant season next year. I’ll continue to give 100% for the team.”
Northants currently sit 18 points clear at the top of Division Two and will secure promotion should they avoid defeat this week.
“From the outset we had a clear plan to get promotion, and so far the team has played brilliantly,” added Vaas.
“All the lads are confident and I’m looking forward to helping the team get promoted to Division One of the County Championship.”
Head coach David Capel said: “It’s fantastic that he wants to be with us and continue the excellent relationship we have with him.
“If you look at the stats – 60-plus wickets at 21, bowling a lot of line and length and moving the ball around – he has done a great job for us this year.”
