Northamptonshire have decided to release veteran Chaminda Vaas after the Sri Lankan spent three years at Wantage Road.

The left-arm seamer initially arrived as the county’s second overseas signing for the Friends Life t20 competition.

Vaas' three-year association with Northamptonshire has come to an end following an injury-plagued season at Wantage Road for the 38-year-old Sri Lankan left-hander

He made an instant impact - scoring 412 runs in a pinch-hitting role and taking 23 wickets to lead Northants to the quarter-finals and being named as the competition's Most Valuable Player.

In 2011, Vaas returned to play all forms of the game, and took 70 first-class wickets at 21.4 and scored over 400 runs en route to winning the club's player of the year award.

However, injuries restricted the 38-year-old - who appeared in 111 Tests - to just six LV= County Championship matches this season.

Head coach David Ripley said: "He has contributed a great deal to Northants during his time here, but I would also pay tribute to his standing in the international list of greats."

"I have felt for Chaminda as he has strived for fitness but has just not been able to beat the injuries this year. A real gentleman of cricket, we wish him all the very best in his future."
