Newman lands at Nottinghamshire

Surrey opener Scott Newman has agreed to join up with Nottinghamshire for a month's loan starting on July 31
Nottinghamshire have signed Surrey opening batsman Scott Newman on loan for an initial one month term.
The 29-year-old left-hander will sit out the LV= County Championship clash with Yorkshire which starts on Tuesday, but will be eligible for Nottinghamshire’s Division One game against Somerset at Taunton beginning on July 31.
“It’s been evident for a while now that the contributions of our openers haven’t been good enough and signing Scott gives us an opportunity to try and make an improvement,” said Notts director of cricket Mick Newell.
“We’ve been very patient with our opening batsmen for the past year and a half but this arrangement gives us an opportunity to have a close look at an experienced player.”
Newman scored 124 in Surrey’s championship game against Derbyshire in April and has a first-class batting average of 41.80. He also had a fine run in the Friends Provident Trophy campaign, but has become unsettled at the Brit Oval.
“If Scott’s loan spell is successful then we’ll look to extend it,” said Newell.
“Having a new arrival can freshen things up and it’s up to the players in our squad to react to it and earn a place on merit.”
