Marcus Trescothick will make his long-awaited return from ankle surgery when he leads Somerset Second XI in their three-day match against Essex this week.

The former England opener, named as the PCA player of the year for 2011 after amassing 2,518 runs in all cricket, has been forced to endure a frustrating spell on the sidelines after injuring his right ankle at Trent Bridge in April.

He is delighted to be nearing a comeback, but acknowledges it may yet be delayed by the weather at Coggeshall.

Trescothick told Somerset’s official website: “I’m desperate to get back into it and just can’t wait. It’s been a good few weeks of getting prepared for this time and I am ready to go now so hopefully things go to plan.

“From all accounts they have had a lot of rain over the last 48 hours and they are not too hopeful of getting much play tomorrow, but who knows? The sun may come out - we will do our preparations so that we are ready to start when we can play.”

Should Trescothick's comeback prove successful, he could feature in Somerset's Friends Life t20 quarter-final against Essex on July 24.
