Surrey have decided that Usman Afzaal will not be required any longer, after three successful years at the Brit Insurance Oval
Surrey have today announced the release of experienced batsman Usman Afzaal after three solid years at the Brit Insurance Oval.
Afzaal, 33, the former England, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire batsman, has not played for the county since they lost by an innings and 44 runs to Middlesex in late July.
Surrey have preferred to concentrate on giving their younger players more opportunities in the two months since Afzaal last made an appearance.
His 2010 record is certainly not disastrous, scoring 682 runs in 13 first-class games, with a hundred and four fifties.
Afzaal played 101 games for Surrey in all competitions scoring 4,328 runs with a first-class average of 46.44. He also took 45 wickets with his left-arm spin.
Surrey managing director Gus Mackay said: “I would like to thank Usman for his contribution to the club during his time here and wish him all the best for the future.”
Afzaal played three Tests for England, all in the 2001 Ashes, scoring 54 in Australia's innings victory at The Oval.
