Barnes switches to Surrey
Surrey have filled the void left by Martin Bicknell becoming their chief scout with the appointment of Gloucestershire bowling coach Stuart Barnes as their fast bowling coach.
Barnes, 42, a seamer who played for Gloucestershire from 1989 to 1991, has worked at the west-country club since 1997, first as a recreational cricket coach then by combining the roles of academy director and second XI coach.
Barnes, who in April 2010 was shortlisted for the position of England fast bowling coach but lost out to David Saker, will next week begin the full-time role vacated by Bicknell at the end of this season.

Barnes said: “The amount of fast bowling talent at Surrey has been a massive attraction for me. Looking at the variety of talent I’m going to have available to me, we’ve got all our bases covered and I am looking forward to having a positive effect on every single one of them.
Surrey team director Chris Adams said: “Stuart is someone we are all hugely looking forward to working with and is a fantastic appointment for the club. He is regarded as one of the finest bowling coaches in the country and will be a very positive addition to both the coaching team and the dressing room.”
Barnes, who has coached Bangladesh A and England Lions, added: "I've thoroughly enjoyed working as fast bowling coach for Gloucestershire CCC in the last few years.
"The flexibility shown by the club, on a regular basis, and most recently allowing me to gain experience coaching in Bangladesh, as well as with England Lions, will prove invaluable as I look to continue moving forwards with my career.”
Gloucestershire director of cricket John Bracewell said: "It is as a bowling coach that Stuart has really shone, guiding many of our young pace bowlers through to becoming formidable first-class cricketers. This has undoubtedly been our strength in the last seven to eight years. Stuart will be missed by both players and staff."
Meanwhile, Surrey performance manager and women’s first XI coach David Court will expand his duties by becoming first team performance analyst for the men’s team. Strength and conditioning coach Ashley Wright has been released with the club seeking a replacement.
