TwelfthMan: My account
Sussex chief executive Gus Mackay has left Hove to become managing director of Surrey.
The 41-year-old fills the newly-created post at the Brit Oval, and will be responsible for all cricket in the county - from the Surrey first XI down to grassroots.
Mackay, who represented Zimbabwe during his playing days, spent three years as operations director at Leicestershire before joining Sussex in 2006.
He oversaw successive LV County Championship triumphs for Sussex as well as victory in the C&G Trophy final in 2006, and admits he leaves the club with a heavy heart.
“I am delighted to have been appointed to this new and exciting role with Surrey and it’s an opportunity I could not refuse," he said.
“It’s been a very tough decision to leave the club, but I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years at Sussex.
“It has been a privilege to have been involved with the club for part of what has been a wonderful period of success.
“Sussex is very unique in the approach to the game both on and off the field and I wish the club every success in the future. The club’s commitment to young cricketers and a one game approach bodes well for the future.”
Mackay added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to work at Surrey in this new and exciting role.
“Hopefully the experiences that I have gained over the years both on and off the field will stand me in good stead to meet the demands of the job.”
Paul Sheldon, Surrey chief executive, said: “Gus’ appointment is an exciting step forward for the whole of Surrey cricket.
“He has a rich blend of experience, both as a successful cricketer and as an administrator which will add great value to our whole organisation.”
Sussex chairman Jim May added: “I would like to place on record my thanks for the contribution that Gus has made at Sussex. He goes with our best wishes.”
