Quintet win junior deals

Surrey second XI toast their Championship triumph - thanks in part to the five players who have won emerging player deals
Surrey have awarded five members of their Championship-winning second XI emerging player contracts.
Batsmen Tom Lancefield and Seren Waters, leg-spinner Muhunthan Harinath and pace bowlers Tom Jewell and George Edwards have been rewarded with new deals which will keep them at the Brit Oval for a further season.
Jewell and Lancefield made their first team debuts this month, and Gus Mackay, Surrey’s managing director of cricket, has high hopes for the quintet.
He said: “At the start of this year there was a distinct policy decision made to play the club’s young players in the Second XI wherever possible and it has paid off with a magnificent Championship victory last week, where seven of the 12 players were Surrey U19s.
“The future development of these players is of vital importance to the fulfilment of our ambition to become the best domestic team of the next decade and they will definitely benefit from the increased responsibility and exposure to first team situations that these emerging player contracts will give them.”
