Adams leaves lasting legacy

Chris Adams

Chris Adams has led Sussex to trophy glory seven times

Chris Adams confirmed his intentions to stand down as Sussex captain after last night’s sensational victory in the NatWest Pro40 and announced that he will be handing over the leadership to Mike Yardy.

During the Adams era Sussex have been county champions three times, won the C&G Trophy final at Lord’s in 2006, twice gained promotion in the 40-over league as second division champions and last night won the Division One title at Nottingham.

Adams commented: “I have had 11 fantastic years in charge of a wonderful group of players but the team is changing. We have had a glimpse of that this season and also that 'my team', which has been together for a long time, is starting to break up, especially with Mushtaq Ahmed retiring."

Yardy added: “He’s going to be a tough act to follow but I am really looking forward to the challenge and I’m sure I will have his support if he carries on playing next season.”

Mark Robinson, professional cricket manager, paid his own tribute to Adams, saying: “The end of the Yorkshire game will be a sad day for everyone, but at the same time an exciting one.

“Grizz has been at the helm for the club’s most successful ever period and will thoroughly deserve all the tributes and praise that he will receive.

“I would like to thank him personally and on behalf of the club for all he has done for Sussex.

“In Mike Yardy we have a man, who is Sussex through-and-through and who has the natural leadership skills to make sure the team continues to drive itself forward.”

Sussex chairman Jim May confirmed: “Chris is captain fantastic. Winning three County Championships means that Sussex are now regarded as a major force in English Cricket. His commitment in leading the side for an unprecedented 11 seasons is undoubted.

“Mike Yardy has the respect of everyone involved with Sussex Cricket. I am confident that he will drive us forward with success.”
