Connor lands Sussex role

Clare Connor is relishing the prospect of being invloved on the baord at Sussex

Former England women’s captain Clare Connor has been co-opted to the Sussex board as a non-executive director.

Connor, who played in 16 Tests and 93 one-day internationals throughout a distinguished career, is most famous for her role as captain in the 1-0 Ashes triumph back in 2005.

The batsman was handed the captaincy in 2000 and, having retired in 2005, currently occupies the role of head of England women’s cricket.

Connor, who was awarded an OBE in 2006, commented: “It’s an honour to be asked to join the board and I feel it will dovetail nicely with my role at the ECB.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in cricket at this level of governance and as a born and bred Sussex girl, I’m obviously passionate about seeing the county be the best it can be.”

Sussex chief executive Gus Mackay added: “We are delighted that Clare has agreed to join the board and brings a wealth of experience with her.

“More importantly she has played for Sussex and captained England to the Ashes victory in 2005 and her knowledge of cricket will be a major asset to Sussex County Cricket Club.”

Jim May, Sussex chairman, said: “It’s a delight to welcome Clare onto the board.”

“Clare has been massively influential in developing women’s cricket in Sussex and England and indeed cricket in general.”
