Prior pens new Sussex deal

Matt Prior enjoyed a prolific season in 2008, averaging 49 in first-class cricket

England wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior has committed his future to Sussex by signing a new contract.

The 26-year-old, who flies out with the England Test squad today for the tour of the West Indies, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal that will keep him at Hove until the end of the 2011 season.

Prior shone with bat and gloves in 2008, winning his place back in the England side in both forms of the game during a season which yielded 983 first-class runs at an average of 49. He also averaged 55 in one-day cricket.

“I am delighted to sign this new three-year contract with Sussex,” Prior said,

“As a club, we’ve had great success over the last few years and, with this new era led by Robbo (professional cricket manager Mark Robinson) and Mike (Yardy), I am certain there will be plenty more to come.

“Mike Yardy will be a fantastic leader and, with the exciting signings we’ve made, the club is in a great place.

“Sussex is a special place to play your cricket, not only because of the team spirit shown by all the players and management, but also the fantastic support shown by all the members and supporters of the club.”

Yardy, who will captain the side this summer, said: “Matt signing long term for Sussex is fantastic news.

“Not only a quality international player, he is Sussex through and through and understands what the club is about and where we are looking to go in the future.”

Robinson added “I’m really pleased that Matt has committed the next stage of his career to us.

“Matt’s been with us all the way through the system. He knows the club inside out, as we know him.

“We obviously hope Matt plays for England throughout the summer, but we know that when he is available, his commitment and ability to play outstanding cricket is up there with the best in the country.”
