Sussex batsman Luke Wells bats during England Under-19s' first one-day international against Bangladesh this summer
Sussex Academy batsman Luke Wells has signed a three-year summer contract, keeping him at Hove until the end of the 2012 season.
Wells, 18, the son of former Sussex captain Alan, is currently studying at Loughborough University and the deal will take him to the end of his studies.
The left-hander played in England Under-19s' two home Tests against Bangladesh this year, and went on to score a maiden century for Sussex second XI later in the summer.
Wells said: “I am obviously very excited about this fantastic opportunity that I have been given, as it is what I have been striving for since I started playing the game.
“I realise that this is the first stepping stone on to bigger things and the real work starts from here on in.”
Sussex coach Mark Davis said: “Luke is a young cricketer full of potential and talent. It’s exciting for both him and the club and we look forward to him joining the squad next summer.
“Luke impressed in the Academy and Second XI this year – scoring a great hundred, which is a fantastic achievement for someone so young. We’re hopeful that he’ll kick on and become the player that we know he can be.”
