Former England captain Michael Vaughan failed again as Yorkshire’s batsmen struggled on another rain-hit day of their LV County Championship Division One match against Sussex at Scarborough.
Vaughan had made 19 out of a total of 27 for one when he sparred at left-armer Jason Lewry in the second over after lunch and wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd held the catch diving to his right.
Rain followed three overs later and when play resumed after a lengthy delay, Yorkshire lost a clutch of wickets to close on 133 for seven in reply to Sussex’s first-innings 265.
Vaughan’s determination to win back his England place after resigning the captaincy is not going as planned; on his return to the Yorkshire side at North Marine Road last week he managed only 10 in the first innings and a duck in the second.
When asked about rumours which linked him with a move to at least one county, Vaughan said: “I am not sure where all this speculation is coming from and I am getting fed up of it. I am just looking forward to getting some form with Yorkshire.”
Sussex were strongly placed when they resumed their innings on 203 for four and Hodd quickly moved off his overnight 66, sweeping Adil Rashid and cutting Deon Kruis for four.
But Yorkshire soon took a grip of things as Rashid claimed two wickets in two balls, the leg-spinner trapping Hodd lbw for 81, made off 174 deliveries with eight fours.
Rashid then turned one away from Robin Martin-Jenkins, whose defensive push was snapped up by Jacques Rudolph at first slip.
Ollie Rayner kept out the hat-trick ball but the Sussex slump continued with Carl Hopkinson falling lbw to Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Sussex debutant Mohammad Sami - signed as an overseas replacement for Mushtaq Ahmed - departing in similar fashion to Rashid.
A freak run-out accounted for Corey Collymore, whose leading edge off Rashid struck Adam Lyth on the leg at silly point and ricocheted on to the stumps with the batsman out of his ground.
When last man Lewry was comprehensively bowled by Rana it meant Sussex’s last six wickets had fallen for just 38 runs in 13 overs.
Rashid finished with 4-56 but Tim Bresnan, who replaced Steven Patterson in the Yorkshire team on his release by England the previous evening, was not called upon to bowl.
Once again, Yorkshire’s innings got off to a miserable start, Andrew Gale falling lbw to Lewry with only four scored, but Vaughan opened his account with a cracking off-drive at the expense of Sami.
The next ball, however, was edged hard to third slip, where Mike Yardy put down the catch, and Vaughan went on to hit two more confident boundaries before departing to Lewry.
Yorkshire soon lost two further wickets on the resumption, Anthony McGrath lbw to Collymore and Lyth caught behind off the impressive Lewry.
Rudolph and Bresnan worked hard to repair the damage but, having seen their side into three figures, Bresnan played on to Martin-Jenkins as he attempted to withdraw his bat.
Rudolph’s resistance was ended by off-spinner, Rayner, who got lift and turn to have him smartly caught by Hodd.
With three overs remaining Rashid edged Martin-Jenkins to be caught low at first slip by Rayner.
