The 21-year-old has been a part of the set-up at Edgbaston for five years and is currently on a retainer contract with Cricket Scotland.

Edinburgh-born Coleman has already represented his country twice in the Clydesdale Bank 40 and played for Scotland Under-19s at last year’s age-group World Cup in Australia.

Coleman revealed his delight at penning terms with Warwickshire ahead of their title defence but, given their success last year, he acknowledges he must work hard to acquire a place in the team.

"With Warwickshire currently the LV= County Champions, it’s obviously a very exciting time to sign my first professional contract and work with the squad in pre-season ahead of our first match against Derbyshire on April 10," he said.

"Whilst I’m thrilled to progress from the academy ranks, I’m aware that the hard work really begins now and I’m looking forward to working with the coaching team of Dougie Brown, Graeme Welch and Tony Frost and hopefully contributing to future success at Warwickshire."

Director of Cricket Brown added: "We’ve got a close relationship with Cricket Scotland and Craig Wright - its performance development manager - suggested that we take a closer look at Freddie because he has many of the attributes to achieve success at the top level; ability, temperament, good team man and he’s prepared to work very hard.

"The pre-season training camp in Barbados is his first tour in the professional ranks, so it’s an opportunity for him to train with experienced members of the squad and start his journey towards being an accomplished cricketer."
