New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel, whose 51 wickets aided Warwickshire’s LV= County Championship Division One title this year, has signed a deal to remain their overseas player next season.

The 32-year-old’s championship scalps came at average of 22.76 over 13 games and saw him recalled by the Black Caps for their tour of India in August and September.

His 11 Clydesdale Bank 40 wickets in 10 matches helped the Bears finish runners-up in that competition and his five Friends Life t20 breakthroughs led to a fourth-place finish in the Midlands/Wales/West Group.

Patel, who first played for Warwickshire in 2009 and is due for his third stint at Edgbaston, said: "Winning the LV= County Championship with Warwickshire is one of the highlights of my career and, with such a strong squad available, I see no reason why we can't push harder for success in all formats next season.

"The new facilities at Edgbaston have made it one of the best grounds in the world and Birmingham has certainly become my adopted home. I'm looking forward to returning in 2013 and hopefully playing a major part in more success for Warwickshire."

Patel will join up with the squad ahead of their championship defence, which begins at Edgbaston against Derbyshire on April 10.

Outgoing Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles, yesterday appointed England ODI and T20 head coach, said: “Jeets is a world-class spinner who’s produced many outstanding performances, and is a great role model to the younger players in the squad.

“Whilst I’m moving on to my role with the England team, I’m delighted that the club has been able to secure him as the overseas player for the 2013 season before I depart. His 51 wickets were crucial to winning the LV County Championship last season, and I know that everyone is looking forward to his return.”
