Chris Woakes' 56 wickets and 579 runs saw Warwickshire make a close-run challenge for the LV= County Championship Division One title

England bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes will continue his county development with Warwickshire after signing a two-year contract extension until the end of the 2014 season.

The 22-year-old seamer has won four one-day and three Twenty20 internationals caps, having made his England debut in January. A quad strain prevented him adding to those during October’s limited-overs tour of India.

Birmingham-born Woakes played youth team cricket for Warwickshire as an 11 year-old and subsequently graduated from the club’s academy.

His first-class debut came for Warwickshire against West Indies A at Edgbaston in 2006 and in that format he now has 223 wickets at 24.60 and a batting average of 33.36, including four centuries.

Woakes’ 56 wickets and 579 runs in this year’s LV= County Championship saw Warwickshire narrowly miss out on the Division One title. However, he has already helped win three trophies: Division Two of the championship in 2008, the 2009 NatWest Pro40 second tier and last year’s Clydesdale Bank 40.

“Warwickshire is my home county and I’m thrilled to be able to extend my stay here at Edgbaston,” said Woakes, whose deal is a year shorter than the one signed a week ago by international and county team-mate Jonathan Trott.

“As a team we made great strides last season and we’re all working incredibly hard in training. With the best facilities, coaching team and supporters we’re in great position to make a strong challenge for trophies in 2012.”

Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles added: “Since graduating from the club’s academy, Chris has gone on to lead the attack here at Edgbaston and establish himself as one of the country’s leading fast bowlers.

“Despite his success over the past few seasons, as a 22-year-old we certainly expect his best days to be ahead of him and everyone here at Warwickshire is obviously very pleased that those years will be spent here at Edgbaston.”
