Former Worcestershire seamer and president George Chesterton MBE died yesterday, aged 90.

Chesterton played for the county from 1950 to 1957, taking 168 wickets in 47 first-class games. He served as club president from 1990 to 1993.

The right-armer represented Oxford University in 1948 and 1949, winning a blue in the second year, and then switched to Worcestershire where as an amateur he played when time permitted.

His first-class career extended until 1966 with appearances for MCC and his best bowling came in his final full season when he took 7-14 for MCC in Ireland.

A keen backer of youth cricket, in 1991 he founded the Chesterton Cup which involved schools across the Midlands. He worked at Malvern College, where he had also been a pupil, becoming deputy head and he also wrote a history of the school. Chesterton received his MBE last month.

Worcestershire chairman Martyn Price said: "George's involvement in many aspects of the club over the years, as a player, president, and latterly his involvement with WOPA means he was well known by many of our members and supporters and he will be remembered fondly by many people."

To honour his life, a thanksgiving service will be held at Malvern College Chapel on Thursday 29th November at 2:30pm.
