Jaques returns to Worcestershire

Opening batsman Phil Jaques last played for Worcestershire in 2007, having first featured for the county the year before
Worcestershire have re-signed former Australia opening batsman Phil Jaques as their overseas player for the first half of next season.
Jaques, who hit a hundred when he last played for Australia in the Test victory against West Indies at Bridgetown in June last year, previously had spells at New Road during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns.
The 30-year-old is set to partner Daryl Mitchell at the top of the order in the LV= County Championship, in place of Stephen Moore who left for Lancashire in early October.
He will also provide valuable experience after the additional departures of wicketkeeper Steven Davies and off-spinner Gareth Batty to Surrey, plus Simon Jones to Hampshire.
Jaques said: “I’m thrilled to be coming back to Worcestershire in what is seen as a rebuilding year for the club.
“I’m keen to not only lead the way with the bat but also help the talented group of young players find their feet in the first-class game and hopefully taste success during the season.”
Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “Signing a player of Phil’s class and expertise is undoubtedly a terrific boost for the club for the first part of the season.
“He is a magnificent run-scorer at the top of the order who scored a century in his last Test for Australia.
“Phil’s career first-class average of 53 compares more than favourably with Graeme Hick, which proves what a top class player he is.
“He will give both experience and a winning attitude to our cricket in 2010.”
Jaques is expected to arrive at New Road in time for the county’s opening match of the season against Middlesex on April 9 in Division Two of the championship.
He is set to be replaced by Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan from mid-July.
